Vitiligo is a skin condition that affects millions of people worldwide. While it’s not physically harmful, it can have a significant impact on self-esteem and emotional well-being due to its visible nature. On World Vitiligo Day, we aim to raise awareness, foster understanding, and empower patients to feel confident in their skin.
👉 If you or a loved one has vitiligo, schedule an appointment with one of our board-certified dermatologists to discuss treatment options and long-term skin health.
What Is Vitiligo?
Vitiligo occurs when the immune system mistakenly attacks melanocytes—the skin cells responsible for producing pigment (melanin). This leads to the development of white patches on the skin that can appear anywhere, including the face, hands, arms, and around body openings like the eyes or mouth.
Vitiligo can begin at any age, though most people develop it before age 30. The condition is not contagious or dangerous—but it is lifelong.
What Causes Vitiligo?
The exact cause isn’t fully understood, but researchers believe it may be linked to:
- Autoimmune responses
- Genetic factors
- Oxidative stress
- Triggering events like sunburn or emotional stress
Vitiligo may occur alongside other autoimmune conditions such as thyroid disease, type 1 diabetes, or alopecia areata.
Types of Vitiligo
- Generalized (non-segmental): Most common form, with symmetrical patches on both sides of the body
- Segmental: Usually appears on one side of the body and tends to be more stable over time
- Focal: Limited to a few spots
- Universal: Covers most of the skin (very rare)
Treatment Options at Mt. Lebanon Dermatology
While there is no “cure” for vitiligo, many people see meaningful improvement through personalized treatment plans. We offer a variety of options, including:
🔹 Topical corticosteroids or calcineurin inhibitors – Help stop the immune response and may repigment skin
🔹 Light therapy (NB-UVB phototherapy) – One of the most effective treatments for widespread vitiligo
🔹 Skin grafting (for select cases) – Transfer of pigmented skin to white patches
Dr. Jeremy Udkoff can also discuss cosmetic treatments through our Dermeve division for patients looking to improve even skin tone or explore advanced laser options.

At Mt. Lebanon Dermatology, we believe everyone deserves to feel confident in their skin. Whether you choose treatment or prefer to embrace your unique skin pattern, we’re here to support your journey with compassionate care and expert guidance.
