Mohs surgery is one of the most effective treatments for skin cancer, offering precise removal of cancerous tissue while preserving as much healthy skin as possible. While the procedure is highly successful, proper post-operative care is crucial for optimal healing and minimizing scarring.

👉 If you’ve recently had Mohs surgery—or are scheduled for one—schedule a follow-up appointment with one of our board-certified dermatologists to guide your recovery. Book your visit today by calling our office or using our online booking tool.

Why Post-Procedure Care Matters

After Mohs surgery, your skin begins a critical healing process. How you care for the wound can affect the speed of recovery, risk of infection, and long-term cosmetic outcome. The good news? Most patients heal well with minimal scarring, especially when they follow proper wound care instructions.

Step-by-Step Aftercare Instructions

1. Keep It Clean and Moisturized

  • Gently cleanse the area once or twice daily with mild soap and lukewarm water.
  • Apply an ointment like petroleum jelly or Aquaphor to keep the wound moist and support healing.

2. Avoid Picking or Scratching

  • It may be tempting, but avoid touching scabs or peeling skin. Let your body do the work.

3. Shield It from the Sun

  • Healing skin is extremely vulnerable to UV damage.
  • Wear a wide-brimmed hat and apply mineral sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher) daily—yes, even on cloudy days.

4. Reduce Swelling

  • Use a cold compress in the first 48 hours after surgery.
  • Elevate the area if possible, especially if the surgery was on your face or extremities.

5. Watch for Signs of Infection

  • Contact us immediately if you notice increased redness, warmth, swelling, or discharge.

Long-Term Scar Care Options

Most scars from Mohs surgery fade over time, but if you're concerned about appearance, there are excellent options available:

  • Silicone gel or sheets to soften and flatten scars
  • Scar massage after the wound is fully closed
  • Laser treatments to smooth and blend scar texture
  • Microneedling or fractional COâ‚‚ laser for deeper improvements

We offer all of these services through our cosmetic dermatology division, Dermeve, right here at Mt. Lebanon Dermatology Associates.

When to Follow Up

A follow-up appointment is essential to monitor healing and discuss cosmetic concerns, especially if:

  • You had surgery on your face or a high-visibility area
  • You're experiencing discomfort or slow healing
  • You want to discuss scar-reduction treatments
