What Is Hidradenitis Suppurativa?
HS is a chronic inflammatory skin disease that most commonly affects areas where skin rubs together—such as the underarms, groin, buttocks, and under the breasts. It often begins after puberty and is more common in women, but it can affect anyone.
Common Symptoms of HS:
- Painful lumps beneath the skin
- Recurring abscesses that may rupture and drain
- Formation of tunnels (sinus tracts) under the skin
- Thickened, scarred skin over time
- Flares that worsen with heat, stress, menstruation, or friction
These symptoms are frequently misdiagnosed as boils or infections, leading to delayed treatment and increased discomfort.
What Causes HS?
While the exact cause is unknown, HS is believed to involve:
- Blocked hair follicles combined with immune system overactivity
- Genetic and hormonal factors
- Lifestyle factors such as smoking and excess weight, which may exacerbate flares
Importantly, HS is not caused by poor hygiene—and it’s not contagious.
Treatment Options at Mt. Lebanon Dermatology
There is no one-size-fits-all solution for HS, but many patients find relief through a combination of medical and procedural treatments:
🔹 Topical or oral antibiotics – Help reduce inflammation and bacterial overgrowth
🔹 Hormonal therapies – Beneficial for some women with HS flares linked to their cycle
🔹 Biologics (e.g., Humira) – Target the immune system to reduce chronic inflammation
🔹 Intralesional steroid injections – Reduce painful swelling during active flares
🔹 Laser hair removal or CO₂ laser treatments – Can reduce disease severity in targeted areas
🔹 Surgical options – For advanced cases, surgical drainage or excision may be recommended
We offer both medical management and laser procedures in-office to give patients a full spectrum of care.
